Great Consequences - a short history
The Musquodoboit Trailways are a network of trails including a 15 km section of the TransCanada Trail along the abandoned Blueberry Run rail corridor and 26 kilometres of back country trails. The latter includes the Gibraltar Rock Loop Trail (1.3 km), the North and South Granite Ridge Trails (18.5 km), the Bayer Lake Loop Trail (1.0 km) and the Admiral Lake Loop Trail (5.5 km). The Admiral Lake Trail was opened in 2000, the Gibraltar Rock Loop Trail opened in 2001 and the Granite Ridge Trails opened in 2002. Only 11.6 km were located within the White Lake Wilderness Area with the remaining situated on Crown or private lands.
Subsequently, a section of the North Granite Ridge Trail that passes through the former Neenah Paper property (1.9 km) was acquired by the Province. In 2009, The Admiral Lake Loop Trail (5.15 km) along with the Skull Rock spur (0.35 km), the Bayer Lake Loop Trail (1.0 km) and a connector trail were included within the newly designated Ship Harbour Long Lake Wilderness Area.
A New Year's present in late 2015 was the announcement of an expansion of the White Lake Wilderness area to include the former private property along with the Gibraltar Rock Provincial Park Reserve. Included in this property is the Gibraltar Rock Loop Trail (1.3 km), a section of former private property (1.9 km) and the original connector trail (1.75 km).
Fifteen years and four governments has led to the inclusion of all of our backcountry trails into Wilderness Areas. These lands provide access to premier rock climbing sites, canoe routes and popular geocaching sites. Recognition of their wilderness values is greatly appreciated.
Many thanks to all of those directly responsible or behind the scenes.
